Testing the new camera

I got a Nikon D40 a few weeks ago, but haven’t really had time to practice with it until today. Here are some test photos! Gotta keep practicing…

Flower shoot

This website was started with the understanding that I would, of course, be taking pictures of my travels in Japan. However, it has since become a kind of photo dump of anything and everything. With that said, here are some practice shots I took today in my apartment of some flower arrangements that my boyfriend gave me. More information about today’s “shoot” can be found here.

New Year’s in Akita

New Year’s was awesome! Daiki drove to Niigata on the 29th and we had a nice last-minute cleaning spree. The next morning, we started our journey to Akita, and taking a small detour in Yamagata Prefecture to Kamo Aquarium, which is famous for jellyfish. We arrived in Akita that evening and spent the first night meeting and greeting his family. The next day, we went to Oga Aquarium, which was surprisingly huge considering the town is so small and rural, and then went to see Namahage, a kind of ritual where ogres barge into people’s houses to terrify the children into behaving. It’s awesome. The next couple of days were spent eating, drinking, building a snowman, and generally enjoying suburban Japanese living. Akita is a really beautiful place, and I can’t wait to go there again!

The Emperor’s Birthday

December 23 is the Emperor’s birthday, which means everyone in Japan gets a day off. Last week, Niigata Prefecture got record snowfall, and Daiki got his new convertible. This can only mean one thing, of course: driving willy-nilly through the freezing countryside with the top down. I thought we were going to die of hypothermia, but we lived, dammit, we lived.
